Brian Berryman - a native of Nova Scotia, Canada, he discovered the charms of historical flutes while completing his Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance in Victoria, British Columbia; a strong interest in music history led him to pursue studies in musicology, whereupon he graduated with the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance Practice from Stanford University in 1994. He then embarked on an intensive course of study of baroque and classical flute at the "Koninkjlijk Conservatorium" in The Hague, Netherlands, under Wilbert Hazelzet. Since settling in Germany in 1995 he has established himself as a freelance flautist for historical performance practice, with a repertoire ranging from French baroque chamber music to Romantic orchestral works. His flute playing has been heard on stages throughout western Europe, North America, the republic of Georgia and Japan, as well as on numerous CDs and radio broadcasts. He works regularly with leading baroque orchestras such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman, and the Bach Ensemble with Joshua Rifkin. He is a founding member of the chamber ensemble La Ricordanza, with whom he has recorded three critically acclaimed CDs. For some years he has been active in traditional folk circles, partly due to homesickness for his distant homeland Nova Scotia, and partly out of the love of "border crossing" that has brought him so far from home. |
